What is Colored Masterbatch?

Colored masterbatch (also known as color concentrate) is a granular material used to impart consistent and

vibrant colors to raw polymers during plastic manufacturing. It consists of high concentrations of pigments or

dyes encapsulated within a carrier resin, such as polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). During production,

a small amount of this masterbatch is blended with uncolored virgin or recycled plastic to achieve the desired shade.

Key Advantages Over Raw Pigments

Manufacturers prefer colored masterbatch over traditional powder pigments for several reasons:

Superior Dispersion: The pigments are pre-dispersed in the carrier resin using twin-screw extruders,

ensuring uniform distribution and minimizing defects like streaks or spots.

Batch Consistency: Pre-blended precise ratios guarantee accurate metering and

repeatable color across large production runs.

Clean & Safe Handling: The pellet form eliminates airborne dust associated with powder pigments,

preventing equipment contamination and protecting operator health.

Enhanced Performance: Masterbatches can be engineered with additional additives

(e.g., UV stabilizers, flame retardants, anti-static agents) to improve the final product's durability.

Manufacturing Process

The production of colored masterbatch involves four key stages:

Weighing & Mixing: Pigments, carrier resin, and dispersants are weighed with

high accuracy and blended in a high-speed mixer to break up agglomerates.

Melt Extrusion: The mixture is fed into an extruder where high temperature and

pressure melt and homogenize the blend, shearing the pigments uniformly throughout the polymer.

Cooling & Pelletizing: The molten strands are cooled and solidified before being cut into uniform

granules via underwater or water-drawn pelletizing systems.

Screening & Packaging: The pellets are screened to remove any oversized or undersized particles,

ensuring only qualified products are packaged for shipment.

Common Applications

Colored masterbatch is utilized across a wide range of industries for diverse applications:

Packaging: Used extensively for bottles, caps, films, and

food containers to ensure brand color consistency and visual appeal.

Automotive: Colors interior components like dashboards and trims,

as well as exterior bumpers and panels, offering excellent heat and UV resistance.

Consumer Goods: Enhances the appearance and durability of household items such

as furniture, toys, kitchenware, and storage bins.

Construction & Infrastructure: Imparts long-lasting weather resistance to pipes,

fittings, cables, and greenhouse sheets.
